-We are a very strong team for studying the viral genetics and the pathogenic roles of the giant virus. We use Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) as model. Our group leader, Dr. Ming-Han Tsai (蔡明翰) is exactly the person who had successfully constructed various standard EBV strains in the world (including all the carcinoma EBV strains). 

​-We have strong collaboration with different research groups and hospitals in Taiwan and globally and wish to eradicate the cancers caused by EBV in the next decades. At first, we are focusing on the pathogenic roles of EBV in gastric cancer and we will expand our research toward other EBV-associated carcinomas. Importantly, EBV is the last major human tumor virus that is still barely understood; so far we still don't have drugs or vaccines against EBV.

-Due to the strong techniques for constructing giant DNA virus, we are also genetically modifying these giant DNA viruses for different applications and seeking for the opportunities for the bio-pharmaceutical businesses. 

-Meanwhile, we are also highly focusing on biotechnology and applied virology. Besides developing the novel antivirals to solve emerging and re-emerging viral diseases, we are also focusing on applying the nature of viruses in biotech and medicine.

  我們以病毒學研究為核心,輻射至免疫學、生物技術及應用病毒學等領域。核心目標是預防與治療病毒相關疾病,為人類健康尋找長遠解方。

  我們的研究優勢包括巨型病毒、重組病毒、應用性病毒與免疫學。特別是在EB 病毒 (Epstein-Barr virus, EBV) 領域,我們具備高度技術能量,已建立多株重組高致癌性病毒株,為探索病毒致病機制與藥物開發奠定堅實基礎。

🦠 EB 病毒為什麼值得研究?

EB 病毒一旦感染,將終身潛伏於人體,並與多種人類癌症、自體免疫疾病及長新冠 (Long COVID) 相關;它能感染並永生化人類血液細胞,且基因體龐大、可供研究與應用的潛力無限。

🦠 那我們到底在做什麼?從「病毒的多重人格」說起:

a. 病毒很壞
它們可迅速傳播、造成全球疫情,並持續突變、挑戰人類防線。→ 聚焦於致病機制及抗病毒藥物 (antivirals) 與疫苗開發,力求為防疫與治療提供新策略。

b. 病毒很有趣且強大
它們擁有強大的宿主操控能力。→ 我們將病毒蛋白與基因應用於生物技術,發展新型工具與平台。

c. 病毒是雙面間諜 
能巧妙操縱與躲避免疫系統。→ 我們從病毒–免疫交互作用出發,探索免疫學核心問題。

d. 病毒操弄免疫組成
深入理解可反向應用於免疫細胞調控與細胞治療。

e. 病毒調皮導致多樣性疾病(EB病毒為例) 
與多種癌症與自體免疫疾病密切相關。→ 可延伸至癌症生物學與免疫耐受 (immune tolerance) 研究。

因此,好好研究一個病毒,不僅能成為防疫尖兵,更能為生醫科技與創新應用開啟新契機。病毒研究—如 EB 病毒,可橫向整合免疫學、尖端生物技術、癌症生物學、應用病毒學與抗病毒藥物開發,這正是我們的熱情所在,也是我們正在努力的方向。💡

1. Remind again: don't bring ANY meat product back to Taiwan.

2. ASFV "currently" has no evidence for causing human diseases.

3. ASFV can be inactivated if the meat had been fully cooked.
